Georgia’s battleground state is predicted to be won by Donald Trump, the former U.S. president.
The 16 electoral votes in the state give Trump a significant edge over Democratic challenger Vice-President Kamala Harris. Trump’s latest victory narrows Harris’s route to the 270 required electoral votes to win the White House. She must now win in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.
In the U.S., a candidate doesn’t have to win a majority of the popular vote. Instead, they must win a majority of electoral votes. These are allocated by state according to population.
The election will likely come down to a few key races in states like Georgia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. Trump was recently declared as the projected winner of North Carolina, a swing state.
Both Trump and Harris aggressively campaigned in Georgia in the days before the election. In recent years, the state has become more competitive. It went from being a Republican stronghold into a hotly-contested battleground.
Georgia voted Republican for the majority of presidential elections from 1972 to 2016. In 2020, U.S. president Joe Biden defeated Trump with just 0.2%, which was the narrowest margin of victory in the election.
The voting in Georgia on November 5 was affected by bomb threats made at polling stations. CNN reported that U.S. Intelligence officials are investigating a Russian domain email account as a possible source of noncredible threats made in Georgia.
A bomb threat forced the evacuation of some polling stations in districts heavily Democratic in the state. In order to compensate for the disruption, voting hours were extended in these locations.
Officials have warned that Russian interference in elections could escalate on election day.
The election results will have a profound effect on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Harris has pledged that she will continue to support Ukraine in its fight for freedom, but many are afraid that Trump may cut a deal, possibly at the expense of painful concessions from Ukraine.
According to projected results from the U.S. Senate election on November 5, the Republican Party has taken control.
Trump led Democratic Vice President Kamala Harri 50.8% to 48.2% with 90% of the votes counted. The projection marks the very first call for a swing state in the U.S. Presidential election.
