The Russian President Vladimir appointed a Ukrainian war veteran lead one of Russia’s regions. This is the highest position that has been awarded to a participant to the full-scale .
This move is in line with the Kremlin’s efforts to build “a new elite” of patriotic soldiers and , reflecting the increasing militarization of Russian Society. Yevgeny Pryshov, former mayor of Krasnodar in southern Russia, was appointed interim of Tambov. Tambov is located about 460 kilometers (286 miles) south of Moscow.
Pervyshov, who is also a deputy in the State Duma, volunteered to fight for Ukraine in November 2022. He was then selected for Putin’s program “Time of Heroes”, which aims at elevating war veterans to influential civil service positions.
Pervyshov’s appointment shows how the Kremlin frames the war as a chance to replace traditional oligarchic figures with more patriotic ones, positioning soldiers and employees as the new face power. According to the Washington Post, this strategy is also used to encourage more men to enlist with the promise that they could gain political power and get prestigious jobs during peacetime.
The program has resulted in the appointment of veterans to various positions including regional ministers and managers for defense contractors. The program is framed to allow veterans to advance in their careers. However, it seems to be a way for those with ties to Russia’s military elite to benefit.
