Zelensky congratulates Trump on US election victory

Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, congratulated Donald Trump for his expected victory in the Presidential election. He expressed hope for “strong bipartisan US support for Ukraine.”
“Congratulations Donald Trump on your impressive victory in the election!” Zelensky spoke on X.
Trump is close to winning, and with only a few votes left, he will be able to secure the 270 electoral votes needed. This makes the chances for Democratic candidate Kamala to win increasingly slim.
His return could spell trouble for the U.S.’s support for Ukraine, as some fear that Trump will try to cut a deal and force Kyiv into painful concessions.
Washington has positioned themselves as the leading military supporter of Ukraine under U.S. president Joe Biden.
Zelensky wrote: “I remember our great meeting with Trump back in September when we discussed the Ukraine-U.S. Strategic Partnership, the Victory Plan and ways to end against Ukraine.”
“I am grateful for President Trump’s commitment in global affairs to the ‘peace by strength’ approach. This is the exact principle that can bring a just peace to Ukraine closer.
Zelensky’s relationship with Trump is complicated. A major scandal centered around a phone call in 2019 during which the then-President Trump allegedly pressured Zelensky into investigating his political rivals through withholding military assistance. The phone call led the first impeachment proceedings against Trump.
The Ukrainian President met Trump during his September visit to the U.S., during which the Republican candidate praised both Zelensky’s and Vladimir Putin’s relationship.
Trump blamed Zelensky, Biden and Putin for the Russian invasion of Ukraine only a few weeks after.
Zelensky stated, “I look forward to personally congratulating Trump and discussing ways to enhance Ukraine’s strategic relationship with the United States.”
Zelensky wrote: “I remember our great meeting with Trump back in September when we discussed the Ukraine-U.S. Strategic Partnership, the Victory Plan and ways to end Russian aggression against Ukraine.”
Donald Trump addressed a crowd of cheering supporters, saying: “I want thank the American people. I am honored to be elected as your 47th President and your 45th President.” The count is still ongoing, so his win hasn’t been officially declared.
