The Ukrainian-born Representative Victoria Spartz won Indiana’s 5th Congress district with a 57% majority.
The Associated Press reports that Victoria Spartz won her position as Indiana’s 5th Congress district by a large margin of 57%.
She was born in Ukraine but did not vote in favor of the Senate Foreign Aid Bill in April 2024. The bill contained more than 60 billion dollars in assistance for Ukraine.
Spartz, a Ukrainian born in Chernihiv Oblast who immigrated to America in 2000, will make history as the first Ukrainian Congress member in 2021. Reports point out her strong alignment with the former president Donald Trump, and her support from gun-owner organizations and pro-life groups.
Since the Russian invasion, her position on Ukraine has changed. She initially supported aid efforts but later criticized Ukrainian leaders, including Andriy Yeermak, the head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, said that more than 100 Republican congressmen who voted against the latest legislative proposal for aid to Ukraine should be aware of how these funds are spent.
