As NATO ministers are preparing to meet, Polish foreign Minister Sikorski calls on a policy change that would allow the interception of Russian rockets over Ukraine. He warns of possible consequences if debris reaches Polish territory.
According to TVN24, the Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Skorski has said that NATO will hold a meeting next week where they may discuss the interception by Russian missiles of Ukrainian territory.
Poland and Ukraine have intensified their military cooperation to intercept Russian drones and missiles that target Ukrainian airspace. A new security accord signed in July 2024 allows Poland the potential to shoot down Russian aerial threats, before they enter Polish soil. This represents a significant change in Poland’s defence strategy. Although there are still concerns about intercepting missiles above Ukraine and possible Russian reprisals, this cooperation is crucial for strengthening regional security.
“It’s a matter of discussion and coordination among our allies. We now have a new NATO Secretary General. “This issue may be discussed at the NATO ministers meeting next week,” Sikorski said.
The official said that the discussion about landing Russian missiles in Ukraine revolves around the question of “where the right to defense begins and ends.”
“Do we only have the right to shoot a missile down when it is over our territory?” Then, there’s no doubt. But then, something like what happened at Przewodow might happen. He noted that the debris from a missile of this type could harm, injure or even kill someone.
Two people were killed by a missile on 15 November 2022 in the village of Przewodow, Lublin Voivodeship near the Polish-Ukrainian Border.
According to UkrInform, Sikorski previously stated that he supports intercepting Russian rockets over Ukraine by using Polish and allies air defenses, and hopes NATO changes its stance in this matter.
The Polish Ministry of Defense stressed that any decision on intercepting Russian missiles above Ukraine must be taken at NATO level. At this time, no such decision has yet been made.
