The Russian military has increased its force structure by 100,000 troops on an expanding eastern front. This has prompted Ukrainian military planners rethink their force structure strategy.
Ukrainska Pravda reported that the Ukrainian General Staff spokesperson, Dmytro Likhovii, said that the country is creating new military brigades, rather than re-enforcing existing ones, in response to the growing Russian forces, and the expanded front line.
“Recently the enemy has increased their number of regiments and brigades as well as their personnel by nearly 100,000 people. Lykhovii added that the length of the frontline had also increased.
According to Lykhovii’s estimates, the Ukrainian military faces an enormous challenge: covering 1,300 kilometers of front line against a Russian army that sometimes has a 5-1 advantage in personnel on the battle line. The Ukrainian Armed Forces focus on building new brigades in order to counter these increased risks without overstretching the existing units.
“When there’s a risk of losing positions or lines of defense for certain brigades the redeployment individual battalions of other military units becomes necessary,” Lykhovii explained.
By forming new brigades the Ukrainian military is able to deploy battalions that are already prepared to high-risk zones, rather than delay responses to accommodate new recruits who require additional training and integration within existing units.
In addition, it is important to form new brigades for rotation purposes. Current brigades also need relief after prolonged time on the frontlines.
“You cannot limit yourself to a simple replenishment of brigades which have suffered significant losses,” Lykhovii said, pointing out that combat coordination is essential.
It is difficult to quickly replenish brigades, as it requires advanced scheduling and time for soldiers and their units to adapt and coordinate.
This approach – creating new brigades that are ready to deploy immediately – remains the most effective way to counter Russian advancements and reduce the risk for breakthroughs along critical front lines.
