South Korean FM warns UN about Pyongyang’s troop deployment, which threatens peace and violates Security Council resolutions.
Yonhap reports that South Korea has asked United Nations officials to demand an immediate withdrawal of North Korean forces from Russia. The UN officials attended the 23rd South Korea – UN disarmament conference in Seoul on 4-5th November.
The discussions take place amid a strengthening of ties between Russia, North Korea. Since February 2022, Moscow has strengthened military ties with Pyongyang, securing more than 2,000,000 artillery rounds and ballistic missiles. Both countries signed a mutual defence pact in the month of June. South Korea, Ukraine and the US reported around 10,000-12,000 North Korean soldiers deployed to Russia for training. Some of these troops were transferred to the Kursk battle zone.
During meetings held in Seoul on the 5th of November, South Korean Foreign Ministry Cho Tae-yul urged UN official to send “stern” messages about North Korean troop deployment, and to end what he called “illegal” military co-operation between Pyongyang, and Moscow, reported the country’s Foreign Ministry.
In discussions with UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo, Cho emphasized that North Korea’s troop deployment to Russia “clearly violates UN Security Council resolutions and threatens the international community‘s peace and stability,” Yonhap reports.
The minister also met with UN High Representative Izumi Nakamitsu to discuss the military cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow, global disarmament, as well as nonproliferation of nuclear weapons. Cho described North Korea’s deployment of battlefield troops as a “serious threat” to international efforts for non-proliferation and nuclear disarmament.
