A Ukrainian-born Democrat, who played a major role in Trump’s impeachment, has won a victory in Virginia’s congressional elections.
The New York Times reports that Eugene Vindman is a Democrat born in Ukraine and a former Army lieutenant-colonel who has won a seat in the Virginia congressional district.
Vindman, a former Trump impeachment candidate who gained fame during the first impeachment process, defeated Republican Derrick Anderson in Central Virginia and Northern Virginia.
Vindman, 49 years old, claimed that democracy itself was at stake during his campaign. He drew on his experience as former National Security Council legal advisor and whistleblower.
The victory maintains Democratic Control of the District previously held by Abigail Spanberger who left to pursue a gubernatorial campaign.
Two Army veterans with legal backgrounds competed for a district that had a significant veteran and federal employee population.
Anderson, a former Green Beret who was endorsed by Trump accused Vindman, of conducting a revenge tour following his dismissal from the government.
Vindman’s twin Alexander testified to the fact that he was offered the position of Ukraine’s Minister for Defense in 2019.
Alexander Vindman called Trump’s phone conversation with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy “inappropriate”, and indicated that Ukraine’s military assistance was contingent upon fulfilling Trump’s requests.
The Pentagon reported later that Eugene Vindman had “faced retaliation from Trump officials”, leading to the dismissal of both brothers.
