The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Budapest, Hungary on November 7 to participate in the European Political Community Summit.
The fifth meeting will focus on the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, as well as the ongoing escalation of violence in the Middle East.
The meeting takes place in an uncertain time for Ukraine and Europe, after Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. Presidential election, with implications for security that are far-reaching.
Zelensky, speaking ahead of the meeting, said: “We will discuss new opportunities for all our partners as well as security challenges in Europe.”
The European Council President Charles Michel, and the Hungarian Prime Minster Viktor Orban whose country is currently the EU Council’s chair, invited European leaders to the Oct. 25 summit.
Orban, a populist illiberal leader who maintained close relations with Russia during the full-scale conflict, celebrated Trump’s win, promising “big future plans.”
Other European leaders viewed Trump’s win as a wake up call for their countries, urging them to take greater responsibility for their security and invest more into Ukraine’s defense.

Two people were injured in a Russian drone attack on Kyiv. The air raid warning in Ukraine’s capital lasted for eight hours. Over 30 UAVs were shot down by the air defenses.
The Kyiv City Militia Administration reported that Russia launched a drone strike on Kyiv over night on Nov. 6. It struck a residential building and an auto repair shop.
Donald Trump received informal and indirect congratulatory messages from other top Russian officials including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing three Trump-connected sources, reported on Nov. 6 that one idea among Donald Trump’s team to end Russia’s war is to delay Kyiv joining NATO for at least twenty years in exchange of continued arms supplies.
