The Associated Press reported that Eugene Vindman won the election for the Virginia House of Representatives. He is a retired U.S. Army soldier who gained fame as a whistleblower, along with his twin Alexander.
The Ukrainian-born politician was also elected on the day Donald Trump won the presidential election and secured his return to Washington in January 2025.
Vindman was originally born in Kyiv, Ukraine in 1975 under the name Yevhen Vindman. He moved to America as a young child and now goes by Eugene.
The two brothers revealed the phone call between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump in 2019. During the call, Trump tried to pressure Ukraine to an investigation into the Biden family. At the time, it was widely believed that Joe Biden would be the Democratic candidate for president.
The call was a key component in Trump’s first impeachment. Both brothers were serving as aides to the National Security Council at the time, and Eugene was dismissed in 2020 in what he called a politically-motivated firing.
Vindman narrowly defeated Derrick Anderson, a former Special Forces officer and Republican. Vindman replaced Democrat Abigail Spanberger who decided to run instead for governor in 2025.
Vindman’s campaign focused on abortion rights and the threat to democracy posed by Trump’s MAGA movement.
Vindman said, “With the help of our grassroots army we achieved something together that many did not think was possible.”
“It is a testament to American experience that a man who fled a Soviet Regime, came to this great country with less than $8 in his pocket and now stands here as a Congressman-elect of United States House of Representatives.”
While it is still unclear whether the Democratic Party can wrest control of the House away from the Republicans, they have already won the Senate back.
Vindman is the second Ukrainian to serve in the U.S. Congress. Spartz was re-elected as the representative of Indiana’s 5th district in Congress. She was born in Chernihiv Oblast, but moved to the U.S. after moving there in 2000.
Spartz initially supported the aid for Ukraine, and spoke about the war with a personal touch. However, she also attracted controversy because of her attacks on President Volodymyr Zelensky and the head of the Presidential Office Andriy Yeermak.
She was born in Ukraine but did not vote in favor of the Senate Foreign Aid Bill in April 2024. The bill contained more than 60 billion dollars in assistance for Ukraine.
The fifth meeting will focus, among other topics, on Russia’s full scale invasion of Ukraine and ongoing escalation of violence in the Middle East.
