French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, as well as Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, issued a statement on Thursday expressing concern over the political climate in Georgia. They said they could not support Georgia’s European Union membership talks unless it underwent reforms.
Macron, Scholz and Tusk, who issued a statement in a written format as members of the Weimar Triangle format, said, as reported by Reuters, “Unless Georgia reverses the current course of its action and demonstrates concrete reform efforts, notably by repealing recent laws that run counter to European principles and values, we will not support the opening of negotiations with Georgia.”
The three leaders issued the statement as nearly 50 European Leaders gathered in Budapest, Hungary, on Thursday and Friday, to discuss support for Ukraine and migration, economic security, and the EU’s declining competition.
