The U.K. announced on Nov. 7, its largest package of sanction against Russia since May 20,23, focusing primarily on the Russian defense industries and mercenary group.
The new 56 listings include the Moscow mercenary Africa Corps, private firms linked to the Wagner Group and suppliers who feed Russia’s war with arms and dual-use products.
Russia has been using private military organizations, including the most famous, Wagner, for years to support friendly regimes in Africa, and to loot their natural resources. Their activities are accompanied by widespread violations of human rights.
In 2024, the Russian Defense Ministry created the Africa Corps to replace Wagner, after the group’s short rebellion in June 2023, and the death of Yevgeny Prgozhin in an August 2023 plane crash. The U.K. has become the first G7 nation to sanction Africa Corps – a group with the same name as Nazi forces that fought in Africa during World War II.
The U.K. Foreign Office issued a statement saying that 11 Kremlin linked individuals, two private mercenary group, and Africa Corps have been sanctioned for human rights abuses in Libya, Mali and the Central African Republic.
David Lammy, the U.K.’s Foreign Secretary, said: “Today’s actions will continue to push against the Kremlin’s corrosive policy. They will undermine Russia’s efforts to foster instability in Africa and disrupt the supply of essential equipment for Putin’s war machine.”
“And smashing illicit international networks that Russia worked so hard to create.”
The list also includes 28 entities in China, Central Asia and Turkey who provide “machine tool, microelectronics components for drones, bearings, or other goods” to the Russian military industrial complex.
The U.K. sanctioned Denis Sergeev of the Russian military intelligence (GRU), also known as “Sergej Fedotov,” whom British authorities linked to the Novichok-poisoned former double agent Sergei Skripal in 2018 and his daughter Yulia.
Sergei Shoigu said that the West should recognize the fact that Russia is winning the war in Ukraine and begin negotiations, as reported by the Russian state news agency TASS on November 8.
