War Zone, a media outlet, reported on November 6 that Ukrainian forces may have targeted routes used by Iran in Dagestan to supply weapons to Russia.
Dagestan authorities reported intercepting an attack by a drone over Kaspiysk on the morning of November 6. Kaspiysk is a port town at the Caspian Sea, around 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) from the frontline. The Kyiv Independent reported that Ukraine’s military intelligence agency was behind the attack.
According to a source, the first Ukrainian attack on a naval base near Dagestan resulted in damage to at least two ships — the missile ships Tatarstan Dagestan and Dagestan. It is also possible that several smaller Project 21631 vessels were also damaged. The Kyiv Independent was unable to verify the claims immediately.
The War Zone experts say that even though it is difficult to determine the exact consequences of the Ukrainian attack, the recent strike was “significant in many ways”.
The port of Dagestan, located on the route used by Iran to transport weapons to Russia, is not only a base to the Russian Caspian Flotilla as well as several military units from the Russian Armed Forces.
This route was considered safe to travel until the recent Ukrainian attack because it was supposedly out-of-range of Ukrainian weapons.
A video shared on social networks appears to show a second drone striking its target and causing a large explosion.
The Mash news channel reported that the incident occurred approximately 15 kilometers (10 miles), and identified the drone as an Ukrainian A-22 Flying Fox.
Local authorities have confirmed that the airport in Makhachkala has suspended its operations for an undetermined period of time due to this incident.
