Foreign Policy’s analysis says that Ukraine “cannot avoid considering a nuke” if it does not join NATO. The US support is expected to decrease under Trump.
According to a new Foreign Policy analysis, the re-election of Donald Trump has forced Ukraine’s government to consider its own nuclear weapons programme as an alternative to declining American assistance.
This is a reversal from the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, where Ukraine agreed to give up its nuclear arsenal of the Soviet era in exchange for security guarantees from Russia, the US and the UK.
The article by Casey Michel of the Human Rights Foundation’s Combating Kleptocracy Program argues that Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has hinted at Kyiv‘s intention to develop nuclear weapons in the event that it does not gain NATO membership.
