Sabrina Singh, Deputy Press secretary of the Pentagon, announced Thursday that the Pentagon plans to use approximately $6 billion remaining Ukraine support funds by 20 January when the Biden administration ends.
Sabrina Singh, Deputy Pentagon press secretary, announced at a briefing that the US Department of Defense intends to use all remaining funds for Ukraine support programs by the end of President Joe Biden’s term.
Donald Trump, a Republican who ran a campaign against continued support for Ukraine, in favor of focusing more on domestic priorities, has won the presidential elections, raising concerns over future US military aid to Ukraine in its battle against Russian aggression.
The Pentagon has about $4 billion in the Presidential Drawdown Authority and around $2 billion in the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. The PDA allows direct transfers from US stocks, while USAI finances new equipment orders placed by manufacturers.
“You will see more assistance packages in the weeks to come, until the end of the current administration.” This is in line with our past practices – we have done this regularly, almost every week,” Singh told Voice of America.
Singh said that some equipment could reach Ukraine in a matter of days or weeks while others may take longer depending on the US stockpile.
“We always consider the capabilities that Ukraine needs, that Ukrainian forces are able to use, and which will have the greatest impact,” she said.
Singh cites the bipartisan support of Ukraine aid in Congress. “Republicans, Democrats and funding have made commitments to Ukraine.” She adds that a new administration will work closely with Congress to develop future Ukraine support policies.
