As part of its sanctions against Russia, the United Kingdom sanctioned Anatoly Bibillov, the former de facto president of the occupied Tskhinvali Region.
The 56 new sanctions are aimed at suppliers who support Russia’s military industry, Russian-backed mercenary units operating in sub-Saharan Africa and 3 private mercenary organizations linked to the Kremlin. They also target 11 individuals with ties to Russian proxies.
Bibilov received sanctions for his association with private groups of mercenaries with ties to Kremlin. The sanctions include a travel ban, an asset freeze and sanctions against trust services.
The U.K. government’s statement of reasons states that “Anatoly Bibilov has been or is involved in destabilizing Ukraine, or undermining, or threatening the sovereignty, territorial integrity or independence or Ukraine, because he engages, supports, or promotes a policy or action that destabilizes Ukraine, or undermines, or threatens, the sovereignty, territorial integrity or independence or Ukraine.”
