Volodymyr Zelensky, the Russian President, said on Nov. 7 that North Korean troops fighting Ukrainian forces in Russia’s Kursk Oblast are taking casualties.
“At the moment, 11,000 North Korean troops are present on Russian soil near the Ukrainian border in Kursk Oblast,” said he at a Budapest press conference during the European Political Community Summit.
There are already casualties among some of these troops who have taken part in combat against Ukrainian forces.
Zelensky didn’t provide any further information about the number of casualties.
Since Ukraine launched its cross-border offensive at the beginning of August, Kursk Oblast has been racked by heavy fighting.
Moscow has sent North Korean troops to Ukraine’s east to reinforce the lines while its most experienced units are still advancing.
Rustem Umerov, Ukraine’s Minister of Defense, confirmed on November 5 that the first clashes had already occurred between the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) and North Korean soldiers.
Zelensky said previously that if Ukraine was given permission to use long-range Western weapons on Russian soil, it could target “every camp” where North Korean troops gather in Russia.
On November 7, he repeated his call.
He said: “We are issuing a caution and believe that, if political and corresponding weapons were not applied to Russia in the future, it could lead to a much greater deployment of North Korean troops.”

International responses to the North Korean troops joining Russia in its full-scale war on Ukraine have so far been limited to condemnation and statements.
According to a statement released on Nov. 5, the foreign ministers of G7 and three key allies have expressed “grave concern” about North Korea’s military presence in Russia. They are now working on a coordinated response.
The statement was signed by South Korea as well as Australia and New Zealand.
“Several thousand DPRK soldiers have been deployed in Russia.” The DPRK’s support for Russia’s war against Ukraine would not only show Russia’s desperate attempts to compensate for its losses but also mark a dangerous extension of the conflict with serious consequences for European peace and security and Indo-Pacific,” read the statement.
“It would be a breach of international law and the fundamental principles of the U.N. Charter.
The ministers condemned the “strongest possible terms” the intensification of military cooperation between Moscow, Pyongyang and Russia, including Russia’s “illegal procurement” of North Korean missiles.
This includes 1,580 casualties that Russian forces have suffered in the last day.
The attack caused damage to multiple residential buildings as well as a local primary school. According to preliminary information, one person died and nine others were injured.
Five times, guided aerial bombs were used by Russia to strike Zaporizhzhia. The attack damaged houses, an apartment building and a cancer hospital.
Local authorities reported that at least 25 people were injured, and that there may be more trapped under the rubble. Search and rescue operations continue at the building.
Lindner said that Scholz had fired the former Finance Minister Christian Lindner because he suggested sending Ukraine Taurus rockets instead of financial assistance, Lindner said.
Sabrina Singh, Deputy Pentagon press secretary, said Washington was “confident” it could fulfill its commitments towards Kyiv.
