I am disappointed with the results of the elections, but also the numerous violations that occurred during the electoral process. Gitanas Nuseda, the President of Lithuania told journalists that this is a cause for concern before the informal meeting between the leaders of EU member states.
According to him, it is impossible to simultaneously talk about the aspiration of joining the European Union, and take counter laws, implement measures, and use insulting language towards the democratic West.
Nauseda also emphasized the need for an independent, international investigation of the electoral process.
“I don’t believe that Georgian Institutions can do this. It would be naive to think that they could. I believe that an independent international investigation is needed. The level and intensity of Russian intervention in the election process is unprecedented and a cause for concern. “I’m not just talking about Georgia, but also about Moldova, and the results of the Moldovan elections were different,” said President of Lithuania.
Nauseda’s answer to the question of what will be the EU response to Georgia was:
“It’s enough to send a signal that says: Friends, if you are doing this, don’t expect to be closer to the European Union.” You are moving the other way, you are moving past the EU. I think this signal should be understood and I hope Georgia can still change course. But at the moment, I don’t believe this will happen anytime soon”, said Gitanas Nuseda.
Gitanas Nuseda also answered the question of whether the Georgians will be able do this under the oligarchic Bidzina-Ivanishvili regime:
“We can see the depth and intensity of the relationship with the Russian Federation. We are not only talking about moving away from Europe, but also moving closer to Russia. “You can’t take the middle road: you have to go either to the east or west”, said Nauseda.
