Borrell, the EU’s top diplomat, arrives in Kyiv

Josep Borrell is the chief diplomat of the European Union and arrived in Kyiv, Ukraine, on November 9, for his fifth visit to Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
Borrell, in a post on social on X, vowed to continue the EU’s support of Ukraine as his “personal priority”.
Borrell’s visit to Kyiv in his capacity as the EU’s High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy comes just a few days following the victory of former U.S. president Donald Trump, the Republican candidate for the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election. Trump has been vague about his foreign policies, but his sweeping win in the 2024 U.S. presidential election added uncertainty to Ukraine’s future military aid from the West.
As uncertainty grows over the level of U.S. assistance for Ukraine under Trump, the focus has shifted towards Europe and its ability to lead the largest European conflict since World War II.
Borrell arrived in Kyiv on November 8 after a visit to South Korea, where he encouraged Seoul’s support for Ukraine in light of the growing concerns about North Korean troops fighting alongside Russian forces in the war against Ukraine.
Borrell is a strong advocate for Ukraine. In August, Borrell urged Western allies not to restrict Ukraine’s use long-range weapons from the West to strike Russian military targets.
The claim comes at a time when Ukraine has intensified efforts over the last few months to strike deep into Russia with homemade drones. These drones have been targeting airfields, oil refineries, and arms depots to weaken Russia’s combat capabilities.
Borrell said in a post on X that EU support was always his “personal priority”, and should remain at the top of the agenda for the bloc.
The report comes after Ukraine’s announced that Russia attacked Ukraine with 51 drones overnight, and the southern Odesa Oblast served as the “epicenter.”
This includes 1,660 casualties that Russian forces have suffered in the last day.
