The Telegraph reported on November 7, citing three Trump employees, that U.S. President elect Donald Trump could ask British and European troops for help in enforcing a buffer zone he would like to impose on the current frontline in Ukraine.
The Telegraph reported that under one of Trump’s peace plans, the front line in Ukraine will be frozen.
The Telegraph reported that Trump’s plan did not include the deployment of U.S. soldiers to patrol the 1,200 kilometer buffer zone, or the provision of financial support by the United States for the mission.
The Telegraph cites a member of Trump’s team as saying: “We can provide training and other support, but the barrel of gun will be European.” “We will not send American soldiers to Ukraine to maintain the peace. We are not paying. “Get the Poles, Germans and British to do it.”
The report’s findings come amid speculation about how Trump will try and fulfill his promise to quickly end the war.
“If we win, before Jan. 20 and before I take the presidency in January, before then, I think we can work out something good for both sides,” Trump told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in New York, in September.
It is unclear why Russia would want a pause in the current phase, since its forces are at the peak of their offensive for 2024 and still have the resources available to continue pushing forward.
On Nov. 9, Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Ryabkov stated that Russia was “ready” to listen to Trump’s proposal but added that “there would be no simple solution.”
Trump’s victory over Democratic candidate and Vice-President Kamala Harris at the Nov. 5, presidential election has added further uncertainty to Ukraine, which is struggling to envision its own future. Trump served as president between 2017 and 2021 before Joe Biden became president.
The Ukrainian leadership has publicly stated that it intends to restore the country’s 1991 borders. This includes the liberation and parts of Donbas occupied since 2014 by Russia.
