The Tbilisi City Court found that the Head of Investigation Department, Adjara Main Department, Constitutional Security Service, and two Special Forces Officers were guilty of the deliberate, illegal detention of Roin Shvadze, an August 2008 war veteran, and the collective murder of an helpless person.
The Tbilisi City Court found the three defendants guilty and sentenced Special Forces officers and the Head of Investigation Department to 12 years and twelve months imprisonment.
The Prosecutor-Generals press release stated that, according to the investigation carried out by the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia on 16 August 2008 the employees of Main Department of Constitutional Security of Autonomous Republic of Adjara under the leadership of its head and his deputy, on the basis of alleged operational information, on charges of cooperation with special services of a country, brutally assaulted Roin Shavadze in a Batumi cafe with machine gun butts.
According to a press release from the Prosecutor Service, Roin Shvadze suffered serious and life-threatening injuries as a result. Roin Shavadze had lost consciousness after the attack. The special forces members took him by car from the accident scene and shot him with automatic weapons near the Adjara/Guria border.
In total, 13 people were charged in this case. All of them were found guilty.
Sergeant Roin shavadze was a brigade lieutenant in the Georgian Ministry of Defense. He was part of the coalition forces that participated in a 2005-2006 peacekeeping mission to Iraq, where he received a Medal for exemplary Service. He also fought during the August War of 2008 Roin Shavadze was arrested by Georgian security forces in Batumi on August 16, 2008. Eyewitnesses reported seeing security officers beating Shavadze and calling him a “traitor of this nation” before they put him into a police vehicle. Six hours later, an officer informed Shavadze’s wife that her husband had died. According to the official version of events, Shavadze had been arrested for a drug offense when he attempted to escape. Both the arrest report and the personal search report, which claimed that drugs were found during Roin’s arrest, were later found to have been fraudulently drafted with the support of the head the Investigation Department.
