The Biden administration is rushing to deliver over 500 interceptors for Patriot and National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missiles (NASAMS) systems, according to a Wall Street Journal report (WSJ) on Nov. 9 citing a senior official.
The delivery comes as the Biden administration plans to rush the remainder of approximately $7 billion of military aid to Ukraine before the inauguration of President elect Donald Trump in January of 2025.
Officials said that the weapons, which should arrive in the next few weeks, will be enough to meet Ukraine’s air defense requirements for the rest of 2024.
No details were given as to the number of each interceptor.
Two administration officials told Politico, on November 7, that the White House intends to expedite weapons deliveries amid concerns that a Trump administration in the future would stop weapons shipments before reaching Kyiv.
Trump has repeatedly stated that he will end the war in “24 hours” as well as get the U.S. out of Ukraine. This plan may include ceding Ukrainian territories and creating autonomous areas in the east.
Reuters reported that in June, two of Trump’s top advisors proposed a plan to stop military aid to Ukraine unless the country agreed to hold peace talks with Russia. The advisors were retired General Keith Kellogg, and Fred Fleit.
White House officials worry that despite President Biden’s authority to draw down existing weapons stocks, it may take months for the large amount of weapons to reach Ukraine – well beyond Trump’s inauguration.
A Pentagon official stated on Nov. 8, that in addition to the interceptors the White House is preparing to send a “small number of contractors” for maintenance of F-16 fighter jets and other air defense systems. The White House rejected the plan in August, but has now changed its mind due to an increase in unserviceable and inoperable weaponry.
The Pentagon stated that “ensuring these weapon systems are mission-capable is critical for Ukraine to defend itself against Russian aggression.”
On Oct. 16, U.S. president Joe Biden announced $425 million of new security assistance to Ukraine during a telephone call with Zelensky.
A senior adviser to Donald Trump said that Ukraine needed to be “realistic in its goals for war” and added that the peninsula of Crimea, which was occupied by Russia, was “gone.”
Dmytro Lubints, Ukraine’s Ombudsman, said that the occupiers had no limit to their cruelty and cynicism.
Syrskyi stated that “we have received numerous reports about the preparations of North Korean soldiers for combat operations alongside Russian troops.”
The shortage of ammunition in Ukraine has been a concern for many years, but it has gotten worse this year.
After the Russian invasion of February 2022, Ukraine began actively developing their missile program.
British defense intelligence estimates that Russia has suffered more than 696,00 losses since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
