‘Crimea has gone’ — Senior Trump adviser says Ukraine must have’realistic war goals’

A senior advisor of President-elect Donald Trump said that Ukraine must be “realistic” about its war goals, adding that the peninsula of Crimea, which is occupied by Russia, was “gone.”
Bryan Lanza, a Republican Party strategist who spoke to the BBC on November 9, said that the Trump administration will ask President Volodymyr Zelensky to present a realistic vision for peace.
“When Zelensky claims that we will only stop these fighting and there will be peace only when Crimea is returned, then we have some news for President Zelensky. Crimea has gone,” he said.
In 2014, Russia invaded and illegally annexed the Crimea Peninsula.
The leadership has publicly stated that it intends to restore the country’s 1991 borders. This includes the liberation and parts of Donbas occupied since 2014 by Russia.
Lanza did mention the Donbas in the interview but said that the return of Crimea “was not the goal of the United States.”
Lanza said that despite the fact that U.S. soldiers have never been deployed in Ukraine and Kyiv has never requested this, Ukraine would be on its own if it wanted to “have American soldiers fight to reclaim Crimea.”
Trump’s victory over Democratic candidate and Vice-President Kamala Harris at the Nov. 5, presidential election has added further uncertainty for Ukraine, which is struggling to envision its future.
“If we win, before Jan. 20 and before I take the presidency… long before then, I think we can work out something good for both sides,” Trump told Zelensky, standing next to him in New York, in September.
It is unclear why Russia would pause in the current phase, given that its forces are at their peak offensive in . They also have the resources necessary to continue pushing forward.
On Nov. 9, Deputy Minister of Sergei Ryabkov stated that Russia was “ready” to listen to Trump’s proposal but added that “there would be no simple solution.”
