Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine’s foreign minister, said that a quick phone conversation between Zelenskyy (the candidate) and Trump (the likely new US administration) shows a communication channel established between Kyiv.
According to Ukraine’s Foreign Affairs Minister Andrii Sybiha who announced the news during a conference with EU’s High Representative Josep Borrell, the two teams will start preparing for a bilateral meeting of leaders.
Trump’s controversial stance on the Ukraine war has caused controversy. He stated that the war was “a loser”, and suggested that Zelenskyy shouldn’t have allowed it to begin. Trump expressed admiration for Zelenskyy by saying, “I had an excellent relationship with Zelenskyy.” I like him,” he said, a shift from his previous remarks in which he called Zelenskyy “the greatest salesman on Earth“, for securing US backing.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, was one of the first world leaders who contacted Donald Trump after the US election. Sybiha, who spoke at the conference, noted that the promptness of the communication indicates a direct channel between leaders.
“It was an honest and good conversation, during which there were exchanges of views about future cooperation,” Sybiha stated, adding that Ukraine expects to continue high-level engagement.
The planned meeting will be their second recent meeting, following discussions in September when Zelenskyy first presented Ukraine’s Victory Plan for then-candidate Trump. Trump expressed his confidence that he would be able to end the conflict quickly if he were elected during their September meeting. He also highlighted his “very strong relationship” with Zelenskyy as well as Russian President Vladimir Putin
Zelenskyy and Trump had a phone call on 6 November, before the official results of the election were announced. They both emphasized that they valued their strategic partnership.
According to Zelenskyy the Ukraine expects that the incoming White House Administration will implement a “peace by strength” approach.
Zelenskyy stated in September that only through force could Russia be forced into respecting rules and adhering to basic world documents. He was presenting his Victory Plan at the United Nations in New York.
