On December 14, the European Council began EU accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova, and granted EU Candidate Status to Georgia.
Georgia has celebrated the awarding of EU candidate status with flags of the European Union flying on the streets and different buildings in Tbilisi as well as throughout the country.
On December 15, just before the official New Year’s lights were turned on in Tbilisi, a public celebration was held on Freedom Square. The speeches included the Prime Minister of Georgia and the EU Ambassador to Georgia, Pawel Herrczynski, congratulating the nation. This was followed by an orchestral renditions of the Georgian anthem and the EU anthem, as well as several musical numbers performed by Georgian celebrities and choir groups.
The European Council’s decision follows the European Commission‘s recommendation on November 8 to grant candidate status for Georgia.
Georgia officially applied for EU Membership on March 3, 2022.
