We did not meet with them because some of these people were directly involved in election campaigns and they violated election principles themselves, said Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze of Georgia when referring to the chairmen of Parliamentary committees on foreign affairs of the eight EU countries.
The Prime Minister of Georgia believes the spirit of the visit by the heads of foreign affairs committees from the eight EU countries to Georgia is not in the national interest of the country.
“First, you already know our position on this visit. We refused to meet with them for one simple reason: some members of this delegation had been directly involved in election campaigns and had violated election principles. You can tell for yourself if they violated election principles themselves when they talk about the legitimacy of elections. The society will then evaluate the situation appropriately. You cannot do something rude and then say that the election principles have been violated. It was inappropriate to meet with such people. Some of the people in this group did not violate election principles, and were not involved in election campaigns, but the spirit of the visit does not serve our national interests. At the press conference they spoke directly about the government change against the will of people. They actually talked about it. This is not the attitude a European politician would have towards a sovereign nation. Kobakhidze said that our position on this visit was appropriate.
As of this morning, the chairmen of foreign relations committees from the eight EU countries have been meeting in Tbilisi. The European MPs met with the Georgian President and then with the opposition. A meeting with the nongovernmental sector is also planned. It is known that “Georgian Dream”, the group that refused to meet with a delegation, has been contacted.
