The United States condemned the violent attacks that took place in Dmanisi on September 21, which appeared to be politically motivated.
According to the statement issued by the embassy this, along numerous reports of intimidation and pressure against opposition candidates and supporters throughout the nation, raises serious questions about the commitment of the government to a safe and fair pre-election process and a democracy election process.
“Violence in an election campaign is unacceptable.” The government is responsible for creating an environment which protects individual rights and ensures that a free, fair and competitive election can be held with confidence by voters.
“The Government of Georgia must redouble efforts to ensure that candidates, their supporters, and others can exercise their democratic right to free speech and assembly without intimidation, harassment or violence. They should also take proactive measures to hold those responsible for election violations accountable.
The statement reads: “All parties have an obligation to promote a peaceful environment in which citizens can express their opinions, discuss issues, and choose their candidate without fear of violence or intimidation.”
On September 21, two activists of the opposition were injured in Dmanisi’s village of Gantiadi. The Ministry of Internal Affairs detained Davit Dautashvili. He is the son of Georgian Dream’s majoritarian candidate.
