**Georgia Marks 31 Years Since Abkhazia Conflict Ended**
It’s been 31 years since the city of Sokhumi, the capital of Abkhazia, fell. This happened on September 27, 1993.
People in Georgia are celebrating this day. It marks the end of a violent conflict between Georgian and Abkhazian forces that lasted from 1992 to 1993.
The trouble started on August 14, 1992, when Georgian troops were sent into Abkhazia. The two sides fought for control of the region. Despite efforts to make peace, the fighting continued.
On September 27, 1992, the conflict finally ended. Sokhumi fell to the Abkhazian forces and Georgia’s troops were defeated. Many people lost their lives in the fighting. It’s estimated that more than 12,000 died.
Around 300,000 people are still without a home because of the war. The region is now occupied by Russia.
