Tensions Rise in Abkhazia After Arrests and Clashes
Violence has broken out in Abkhazia after local security services arrested five opposition leaders. Social media channels have posted pictures of tense clashes near the security service headquarters.
There are reports that military vehicles have entered the capital city, Sokhumi.
The arrests come as part of a public debate over a law package that would allow Russian investors to own property and land in Abkhazia. The opposition has strongly opposed this move and plans to hold a large rally on November 15th.
This development is linked to tensions between Abkhazia’s de-facto leader, Aslan Bzhania, and Moscow. In September, Russia cut funding to the occupied region after Sokhumi failed to implement agreed-upon measures.
Locals are now blocking bridges in Gudauta and Kodori and demanding the release of those arrested.
Historical Context:
* In September 2024, Russia suspended funding to Abkhazia due to Sokhumi’s reluctance to follow agreements.
* Last month, Russia threatened to cut funding and revoke citizenship if Abkhazia failed to “fulfill its obligations”.
* Just last week, a Russian Deputy Minister of Economic Development stated that the relationship between Moscow and occupied Abkhazia was almost fully harmonized.
