Tensions Rise in Abkhazia After and Clashes

has broken out in Abkhazia after security services arrested five opposition leaders. Social media channels have posted pictures of tense clashes near the headquarters.

There are reports that military vehicles have entered the capital city, Sokhumi.

The arrests come as part of a public debate over a law package that would allow Russian investors own property and land in Abkhazia. The opposition has strongly opposed this move and plans to hold a large on November 15th.

This development is linked to between Abkhazia’s de-facto leader, Aslan Bzhania, and Moscow. In September, Russia cut funding to the occupied region after Sokhumi failed to implement agreed-upon .

Locals are now blocking bridges in Gudauta and and demanding the release of those arrested.
