Ukrainians Sign Up to Fight in Ukraine
The Ukrainian Defense Ministry says the first group of Ukrainians have joined the Ukrainian Legion, a volunteer unit that fights for Ukraine. They signed up in Poland and will get training from the Polish military.
This is part of a bigger effort to fill the ranks in the Ukrainian army while it’s at war with Russia. The Legion was created so Ukrainians living abroad can join the fight and then return home when their service ends.
To become soldiers, they must go through a 35-day basic training course in Poland. They will learn how to use modern weapons and get guidance from experienced commanders who have fought in battles.
As of November 12, over 700 people had applied to join the Legion. Many Ukrainians have left their homes due to the war and are now living abroad.
Those who want to join must be between 18 and 60 years old. Once they complete their training, they can choose a specialty and get further training at NATO bases in Europe.
This way, Ukrainians can help defend their country without being stopped by martial law that prevents them from leaving Ukraine for too long.
