US Should Help Ukraine Join NATO to Avoid War
The US should hurry up and make Ukraine a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to prevent war, according to Evelyn Farkas. She is the head of the McCain Institute.
Farkas thinks that if Ukraine joins NATO, it will be safer from Russia’s attacks. However, she also believes that this could lead to some risks and that Russia might test how strong the US and its allies are.
Farkas wants President Biden to work with other countries in NATO to invite Ukraine to join the alliance as soon as possible. This would help to stop a third war between Russia and others, and keep Ukraine safe.
NATO has already said that Ukraine will become a member of the organization at some point. However, the exact date is not clear yet. Russia’s main goal is to avoid a direct war with NATO, which makes it hard for Ukraine to join immediately.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wants a clear plan and promises of safety from NATO so that he can stop the conflict with Russia. He thinks that joining NATO will help prevent future Russian attacks.
Farkas suggests that NATO forces could be sent to Ukraine as guests, using special agreements that some countries have already made with Ukraine. This would make Russia think twice about taking further action.
She believes that only a strong US and its allies can stop Russia’s leader Vladimir Putin from destroying the rules of international order. Russia wants to join all countries under one government like it used to be before, which is not allowed anymore.
Farkas wrote that Ukraine has experience fighting against Russians and keeping them off balance, so joining NATO would be helpful for everyone.
The US administration has said that they will help Ukraine get into NATO but first, Ukraine needs to win the current battle.
