Donald Trump has chosen Michael Waltz to be his national security adviser. Waltz is a Florida Congressman and a former Army Green Beret.
Waltz’ views on Ukraine have changed over time. In 2022, he urged the US to provide more aid to Ukraine, saying it was in America’s interest to help Ukraine against Russia. However, this year, Waltz questioned whether the US should be involved in Ukraine at all.
Waltz asked: “Is it in America’s interests to be involved in Ukraine? Should we be investing our time and resources elsewhere?” This change of heart is significant because Waltz is a strong critic of China and Trump’s team is focused on opposing China rather than Russia.
It is worth noting that the US has been providing aid to Ukraine as part of its efforts to counter Russian aggression. The US has also imposed economic sanctions on Russia in response to its actions in Ukraine.
