German Chancellor Plans to Talk with Putin Soon
Germany‘s leader, Olaf Scholz, said he will soon talk with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He wants to make sure that Ukraine and their allies are on board before making the call.
Scholz made this announcement on a German TV show called “Caren Miosga”. He stressed that being a responsible politician means not acting alone in big decisions like this one.
The US had recently spoken with Russia, but the details were not clear. The Kremlin said it was not true and that no such call took place.
Scholz wants to have a multilateral approach when talking to Moscow. This means involving other countries in the conversation.
When asked about when he would talk to Putin, Scholz replied “soon”. He emphasized that there need to be extensive consultations with Ukraine before making the call.
The last time Scholz directly spoke with Putin was in December 2022. At the time, he advocated for a diplomatic resolution and Russian withdrawal from Ukraine.
There have been previous reports of Scholz wanting to talk to Putin, but nothing has come of it yet. The Kremlin denies receiving any request for the two leaders to speak on the phone.
Scholz wants to make sure that any future talks with Russia are not just empty conversations. He insists that they need a real purpose and meaning.
