Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved a change in the way soldiers are paid for injuries while fighting against Ukraine. This change will affect how much money wounded soldiers get.
Right now, soldiers who are injured get up to 3 million rubles (nearly $29,000). But this new rule says that if an injury is “severe”, they still get 3 million rubles. If it’s considered “minor”, they get 1 million rubles ($10,000). And for some smaller injuries, they will get just 100,000 rubles (about $960).
The Russian government hasn’t said exactly how they will decide which injuries are “severe” or “minor”. Deputy Defense Minister Anna Tsivileva said that the old rules were confusing and unfair.
Russia has been losing soldiers at a high rate in Ukraine. In October, it’s estimated that over 41,000 Russian troops were killed or injured. But Russia is also making gains in some parts of Ukraine.
The article from Bloomberg shows that since August, Ukraine has lost around 1,146 square kilometers of land to Russia.
