Russia’s Counterattack in Kursk Falters, Leaving Heavy Losses Behind
A Russian counteroffensive in the Kursk Oblast of Russia has not made significant gains against Ukrainian forces. Instead, it has resulted in heavy losses for Russia.
In August 2024, Ukrainian forces launched a successful operation in Kursk Oblast, pushing into Russian territory up to 35 kilometers deep and capturing hundreds of Russian soldiers. This advance was followed by over 20,000 casualties among Russian troops.
The situation on the ground has since stabilized, with both sides digging in for a long fight. Ukrainian drone operators have identified significant Russian losses, including 77 destroyed armored vehicles over six days.
“This is enough equipment for three Russian battalions,” said Kriegsforscher, a Ukrainian drone operator. “And it’s only what’s visible and confirmed with video.” Actual Russian losses could be much higher.
Ukrainian forces have held firm against the Russian counterattack, with some units even managing to counterattack in parts of the front line. The fighting has been intense, particularly around Novoivanovka.
The Kremlin has bolstered its defenses by deploying fresh troops and equipment from other areas, including the 51st Airborne Regiment and the 810th Marine Brigade. However, these reinforcements have not brought an end to the stalemate.
In fact, Russian losses have continued to mount, with a record single-day loss reported on November 13: 1,950 personnel and 104 destroyed armored vehicles. Kursk Oblast accounts for most of these losses.
Russian authorities are now preparing to evacuate civilians from Kursk and Belgorod to occupied Zaporizhzhia as the situation continues to deteriorate.
