**NATO Leader Speaks Out on Nuclear Threats**
The head of NATO’s Military Committee, Rob Bauer, has spoken out about the threat of nuclear escalation. He said that if Russia didn’t have nuclear weapons, NATO would be in Ukraine and pushing Russians back.
Bauer made his comments at a defense summit in Prague last week. He was responding to Russia’s recent updates to its nuclear doctrine. In September, President Putin announced changes to how Russia uses nuclear weapons. Now, Russia says it will use nukes if:
* A non-nuclear state attacks Russia with the help of a nuclear power
* There is evidence of a massive air and space attack on Russia
**NATO Stands Firm**
Despite these threats, NATO’s leader, Jens Stoltenberg, says that his organization won’t be intimidated. He thinks that giving military aid to Ukraine shouldn’t be stopped because of Putin’s “reckless” nuclear talk.
Bauer agrees, but with a caveat. He said that if NATO were to go to war with Russia, the alliance itself would be at risk. This suggests that Western officials see this as more of a political issue than a straightforward military one.
