European Parliament Urged to Act on Georgia Election Concerns
MEP Nathalie Loiseau spoke out in the European Parliament about election irregularities in Georgia. She was part of a team that observed the country‘s October 26 elections.
Loiseau and her colleagues reported witnessing instances of fraud and intimidation during the voting process. She stressed that it’s essential to address these issues quickly, citing high expectations from the Georgian people for support from the European Union.
The MEP highlighted ongoing protests in Georgia where people are demanding EU assistance. Many protesters were carrying both Georgian and European flags. Loiseau said the European Council should have discussed this situation at its last meeting but didn’t find time to do so.
Loiseau called on her fellow lawmakers to take stronger action, emphasizing the role of the European Parliament as a champion of democracy. She urged them to adopt a formal resolution about the election issues in Georgia.
The MEP’s call for action was met with a vote in the European Parliament. 309 lawmakers supported the resolution, while 191 voted against it. Another 34 abstained from voting.
