Georgian Politician Responds to German Ambassador’s Comments
A Georgian politician has responded to comments made by the German ambassador to Georgia. The ambassador, Peter Fischer, wrote that he was worried about Georgia’s current policy and had led to the cancellation of some large military projects.
The response came from Irakli Kadagishvili, a member of the “Georgian Dream” party. He said that the reason for the cancelled projects was not because of any issues with transparency or elections, but rather because the German government was too lazy to send their own troops to fight in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa.
Kadagishvili pointed out that it costs a lot more to send one’s own soldiers on missions, so sending Georgian soldiers instead is seen as a cost-effective solution. He also noted that Georgia played a smaller role in the war in Afghanistan than Germany did.
The politician went on to say that the European Union has made significant investments in Georgia over the years and that this investment is now being repaid through the country‘s military cooperation with other nations.
Fischer had written: “We are celebrating the founding day of the Budeswehr [German armed forces] with the guest of honor, Deputy Chief of Defense, Brigadier General Chichinadze. I am proud of the German-Georgian military cooperation and Germany’s support for the capabilities of the Georgian Defense Forces. Unfortunately, Georgia’s current policy is worrying for Germany and has led to the cancellation of some major military projects in Georgia.”
