Holidays Imposed in Public Institutions
The government has decided to close public institutions from January 1-10. This is to reduce the number of people moving around. The decision was made by a group called the Inter-Agency Coordination Council.
The Prime Minister, Irakli Garibashvili, led a meeting at the Government Administration. It was also announced that schools will be closed from December 29 to January 17.
The Council discussed the current situation with COVID-19 in Georgia. A new variant of the virus called Omicron was detected on December 20. The Head of the National Center of Disease Control and Public Health, Amiran Gamkrelidze, updated the Council on this new information.
The Council decided not to ease any restrictions because of the spread of Omicron. They are urging citizens to wear masks, keep a distance from others, and get vaccinated to avoid stricter measures in the future.
The government is instructing institutions to strictly enforce current regulations. Since the start of the pandemic, 916,477 people have been infected with COVID-19 in Georgia. So far, 869,411 have recovered, and 13,221 have passed away.
Currently, there are 35 people in quarantine, 1,001 in clinical hotels, and 5,488 in healthcare facilities under medical supervision.
