Swedish Embassy Criticized for Supporting Disinformation in Georgia
The Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili, has spoken out against a letter sent by the Swedish Embassy to a local organization. He believes that funding an organization that spreads disinformation is not acceptable.
Papuashvili said that “Transparency International-Georgia” is spreading false information about the country’s constitutional order. This, he claims, is done on purpose to confuse the public. The Speaker called on the organization to clarify their position, but they remain silent.
He criticized the Swedish Embassy for not understanding what freedom of expression means. A lie, he said, is not protected by freedom of speech and expression. Papuashvili believes that when a donor sees an organization using their money to undermine democracy in another country, it is their responsibility to react.
The Speaker also mentioned that the chairman of the European Affairs Committee of the Swedish Parliament had previously called for protests against the government, violating international law. He suggested that this was not surprising, given the embassy’s response to the current situation.
Papuashvili emphasized that when a country’s money in another country harms the interests of society, it is anti-European behavior. The Speaker demands more specific answers from the Swedish Embassy regarding the problems caused by their funding in Georgia.
