**Ukraine Rejects Diplomatic Talks with Russia**
The Ukrainian government is not happy about Germany’s recent phone call to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the call a “Pandora’s box” that could lead to more unwanted diplomatic talks.
Germany has been supporting Ukraine with military aid, but Chancellor Olaf Scholz refused to send Ukraine its Taurus missiles earlier this year. This was because Scholz feared it would trigger an escalation of the war.
**Zelenskyy Speaks Out**
In a speech on November 15, Zelenskyy said that Scholz’s call to Putin was a mistake. He believes that Russia wants to weaken its isolation and conduct talks that will lead to nothing.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry also spoke out against the call. They said it would not bring peace to Ukraine and only give Russia hope of weakening international sanctions.
**Germany’s Position**
The German government reported that Scholz condemned Russia’s war on Ukraine and urged Putin to end it. He also pressed for Russia to negotiate with Ukraine towards a just and lasting peace.
Scholz plans to continue contacting Putin, but this has been met with skepticism by the Ukrainian government.
**Polish Prime Minister Supports Germany**
The Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, supported Scholz’s call to Putin. He was satisfied that Scholz condemned Russian aggression and repeated the Polish position of not doing anything in Ukraine without Ukraine’s agreement.
**Ukraine Wants Strong Actions**
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry emphasized that strong actions are needed to force Russia towards peace, not persuasion or pacification. They believe this is a sign of weakness and would only be used by Putin for his own purposes.
