Russia’s Attacks on Ukraine in October Cause High Number of Civilian Casualties
The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine reported that 183 civilians were killed and 903 people injured during Russia’s attacks on various regions of Ukraine in October.
Most of the casualties happened along Ukraine’s eastern front, particularly in Kherson, Kharkiv, and Donetsk oblasts. Eighty percent of the victims were from this area.
Nine children were killed and 49 more were hurt in the attacks. The report noted that many of the victims were older people, with 45% being over 60 years old.
The main cause of the casualties was aerial bombardment, artillery shelling, and drone and missile attacks. Russia has been using attack drones to target cities and towns across Ukraine since September.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia launched over 2,000 Shahed-type drones at Ukraine in October. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia had launched at least 4,300 such drones between August and October.
Most Ukrainian cities have been spared from large-scale Russian missile attacks on infrastructure recently. However, a new attack occurred on November 17, targeting major cities and energy infrastructure around the country. This left seven civilians dead and 19 injured across multiple regions.
