President Salome Zurabishvili has filed a lawsuit in the Constitutional Court of Georgia. This was announced by her lawyer, Eka Beselia.
According to Beselia, the President’s move is important even though there is no trust in the court. She says the President used this legal path because it’s the only way to protect citizens‘ rights.
The lawsuit is about two main constitutional rights: universality and secrecy of the vote. The first issue is that voters outside of Georgia were not allowed to participate in the elections. The second issue is that the secrecy of the vote was violated, which means people’s choice may have been influenced.
Beselia also mentioned another problem with election rules. She says it’s unfair for parliament members to be forced to prove their authority and then lose it at a later time.
This news comes after President Zurabishvili announced yesterday that she would file a constitutional lawsuit regarding election violations. The President said the lawsuit refers to two main principles: secrecy and universality of the vote.
It’s worth noting that President Zurabishvili has no hope in the court’s decision, but still thinks it’s necessary to try all legal ways.
