UK Imposes Sanctions on Russia Over Ukraine Invasion
The UK Government has announced new sanctions against ten Russian officials. These people are being punished for their role in taking Ukrainian children from their homes and trying to make them adopt a Russian way of life.
This move comes as Ukraine marks 1,000 days since Russia’s invasion began. The war has been going on for almost three years now and has had devastating effects. Many civilians have died, with over 12,000 killed. More than 10 million people have also lost their homes and been forced to leave.
The UK is committed to supporting Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invasion. So far, they have given £12.8 billion ($16.2 billion) in aid. They are promising an extra £3 billion ($3.8 billion) each year until the war ends.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy strongly criticized Russia’s actions, calling them “barbaric”. He believes that taking children away from their families is a grave human rights abuse and goes against Ukraine’s sovereignty.
