Georgia’s Election Under Scrutiny
The OSCE/ODIHR has released its preliminary report on the country‘s recent parliamentary elections. The report highlights several issues, including unequal conditions during the pre-election campaign and numerous violations on election day.
Diplomats from European countries have expressed concern about these findings. Meline Arakelian, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Georgia, spoke out in an interview with “InterpressNews“. She noted that such elections are disturbing for a country like Georgia, which is working towards democracy.
The Netherlands joined other European countries and institutions in calling for an impartial investigation into all complaints and the elimination of violations. The ambassador emphasized that it’s essential for the Georgian authorities to conduct this investigation in a reliable way.
The OSCE/ODIHR report was based on a large international observation mission, which is why the ambassador bases her opinion mainly on its findings. She has expressed concerns about the need for an impartial and credible investigation to restore public confidence in the electoral process.
The investigation’s outcome will also provide lessons for future elections. The OSCE/ODIHR regularly issues recommendations to improve the electoral process.
