Opposition Members’ Move to Leave Parliament Questioned
The head of the “Georgian Dream” party, Mamuka Mdinaradze, has questioned why opposition members are trying to leave parliament. He says they must have known their statements would not be legally binding at the time.
According to Mdinaradze, the opposition wrote their statements before a declaration that recognized the authority of the Parliament of Georgia. This was so they wouldn’t actually have to leave parliament and refuse their mandates.
Mdinaradze believes it’s likely that some or all of the opposition members will return to parliament soon. He says this is because they knew their initial statements had no legal force. If they truly wanted to leave, he would advise them to write new statements after parliament recognized their authority.
The complaints filed by opposition members and the President with the Constitutional Court are also seen as having no basis in law. Mdinaradze argues that there’s no rule or record that supports their claims. He believes the opposition is trying to deceive their voters into thinking they’re excluded from entering parliament, but this will soon become clear.
Mdinaradze says the opposition’s actions show a lack of understanding of the rules and regulations surrounding parliamentary procedures. He accuses them of inventing reasons for their lawsuits without any legal basis.
