Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel Describes Donald Trump‘s Views on Putin
Angela Merkel, former Chancellor of Germany, has written in her new memoir that Donald Trump is fascinated by Russian President Vladimir Putin and other authoritarian leaders. She also describes Trump as having a “winner-or-loser mentality”.
Merkel’s comments are published in the book “Freedom: Memories 1954-2021”. In it, she writes that Trump views the world like a property developer, where every opportunity can only be sold once.
Trump’s relationship with Putin is under scrutiny as he prepares to return to the White House. Merkel says that during their meetings, Trump was clearly fascinated by Putin.
This view seems to align with Trump’s past actions and statements. In 2018, Trump said publicly that he would trust Putin over his own intelligence services. Since leaving office, Trump has praised Putin for his audacity and called him a “genius” and “savvy”.
Trump has also spoken to Putin many times since leaving the presidency, including a private phone call at his Mar-a-Lago mansion in Florida.
Putin has made positive comments about Trump as well. After an assassination attempt on Trump, Putin praised him for behaving courageously like a real man.
Merkel describes Trump as being under the spell of politicians with autocratic and dictatorial tendencies. She says that Trump sees strong leaders as winners who will not be disrespected.
This view is shared by others who have observed Trump’s behavior. Politico has described Trump as heaping praise on leaders who have praised him or who he sees as strong figures on the world stage.
