Germany’s Public Backs Away from Providing Ukraine with Long-Range Missiles
A recent poll in Germany has shown that the majority of citizens are against providing Ukraine with advanced long-range missiles. The Taurus cruise missile, which can strike targets up to 500 kilometers away, is not wanted by most Germans.
The results of the survey were clear: 61% of respondents said no to supplying Ukraine with Taurus missiles. Only a third of those questioned supported the idea. Some people even want to use these missiles to attack Russian territory (27%), or for deliveries without permission from Russia (3%).
There is a significant difference in opinions between east and west Germany. In eastern regions, 76% opposed giving Ukraine the missiles. This number was lower in western areas at 56%. However, there were more people in the west who supported providing these weapons to Ukraine than those in the east.
This opposition to supplying Ukraine with long-range missiles is causing problems for Western countries that want to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia. Germany’s leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Friedrich Merz, has said that sending Taurus missiles would not get Germany involved in the war.
The Free Democratic Party (FDP) may soon make a decision on whether or not to bring this issue to a vote in the Bundestag.
The poll was conducted between November 18-20 and involved 1,318 eligible respondents. There is an error margin of 2-3 percentage points.
