Georgia’s Opposition MPs May Withdraw Mandates When the West Says ‘No’ to Elections
The opposition in Georgia may withdraw their mandates from parliament when the West says that the October 26 elections cannot be considered valid.
This is according to Gia Khukhashvili, a political scientist. He believes that the moment for this action will come when the West finally makes its position clear and starts cooperating with the government.
Khukhashvili thinks that if the West “indirectly recognizes” the parliamentary elections and starts working with the government, the opposition will be left without a partner. This means they won’t get any practical results from their protests.
He also believes that giving legitimacy to the current government would be equivalent to political suicide for the opposition.
Khukhashvili said that it’s not yet time for the opposition to withdraw their mandates. The West has not yet made its final decision, and this process may take several months.
The “Gakharia for Georgia” party is also considering withdrawing their mandates from parliament. However, they are waiting for the best moment to do so.
Khukhashvili thinks that when the West finally makes its position clear, it will be time for the opposition to withdraw their mandates and complete the delegitimization of the government.
