**Air Defense Systems Arrive in Ukraine**
A shipment of air defense systems has arrived in Ukraine, thanks to the Canadian government‘s assistance. Canada’s Defense Minister Bill Blair made the announcement on November 22.
The U.S.-made National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) was first promised to Ukraine back in January 2023. Although Canada reportedly paid for the system, worth around $289 million, its delivery had been delayed.
**System Delivered**
The NASAMS are now in Ukrainian hands. According to Blair, this ground-based air defense system will help protect Ukraine from destructive air attacks. Canada’s support for Ukraine is “steadfast” and will continue to grow, Blair added.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously stated that the country expected to receive the defense system by the end of the year. The delivery comes as Ukraine faces intensified Russian aerial attacks, including a recent strike on Dnipro.
**Importance of Air Defense**
Zelensky emphasized the importance of advanced Western air defense systems after the strike on Dnipro. He directed Defense Minister Rustem Umerov to begin talks with partners to acquire more equipment.
Ukrainian forces have been using NASAMS systems since November 2022, when the U.S. delivered the first batteries during a surge in Russian airstrikes.
